HORST KOHLEM studied at the Karlsruhe Art Academy and graduated with a Masters in Fine Arts degree.  He has been consistently working as a painter and sculptor since then.  Kohlem has exhibited internationally and is aprt of several private and public collections such as the Museo de Arte Contemperano Sao Paulo, Brazil;  the Bass Museum of Miami Beach, Florida;  the Queens Museum of New York, NY; Staedt Galerie of Karlsruhe, Germany;  Landesmuseum Oldenburg, Germany; and the City of Miami Public Collection, Florida.

A selection of some of his latest single and group exhibitions include:  Biennale Sao Paulo, Brazil 1996;  European Parliament, Strassbourg, France;  "Classical Myth and Imagery in Contempory Art," Queens Museum, New York;  Kunstverein Stuttgart, Germany;  Kunstverein Karlsruhe, Germany;  Badischer Kunstverein, Germany;  and Stadtmuseum Ettlingen, Germany.

More recently Kohlem has been working in the United States focusing on a series of large-scale paintings.  The Bass Museum has acquired some of these for their permanent collection.  His paintings evoke images and fragments of ancient civilizations with their crusty texture.    As Barbara Matilsky of the Queens Miami said of the artist's work:  "One's sense of place in the universe is obliquely alluded to in Kohlem's work."
