Provenance & Extra Info
The only drawing by Jerry Garcia which bears a title relating to a Grateful Dead song. In general, Jerry liked to keep his visual art separate from his work in the band, and there is little if any crossover of themes or lyrics. Here however, we see the image of the person who inspired the song Wharf Rat, as the artist must have encountered him-- "My name is August West..." crouched on the sidewalk, head downcast as he fingers a cigarette or a piece of trash, his ever present bottle beside him. "...I'll get up and fly away..fly away..." This rare drawing is in ink on paper, created around 1993 and first exhibited at the Weir Gallery in Berkeley. Currently featured in "Jerry Garcia: The Collected Artwork" recently published by Insight Editions in association with the Jerry Garcia Estate. A rare work of art and an insight into the artist's creative process linking his art to his music.
