Léon Samoilovitch Bakst (May 10, 1866 – December 28, 1924) was a Russian painter and scene- and costume designer who revolutionized the arts he worked in. Born as Lev (Leib) Rosenberg, he was also known as Leon (Lev) Nikolayevich Bakst. Bakst is known for his stage designs and costumes for Sergei Diaghilev's "Ballets Russes". His designs are a mingling of very elegant and refined styles, themes and techniques. Influenced by Greek vase painters and miniaturists the use of vivid color is what Leon Bakst is best remembered for in his designs. His graphics for the World of Art magazine brought him fame. He also worked as an art teacher for the children of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia. In 1902, he took a commission from Tsar Nicholas II to paint Meeting of Russian sailors in Paris. In 1914, Bakst was elected a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Leon Bakst died in Paris in 1924.
