1915-1991 - Robert Motherwell is one of the most recognized of the American Abstract Expressionist painters. He moved to Greenwich Village in 1941, abandoning his academic studies to paint full time. Motherwell created his first collages at Jackson Pollock's Studio in Greenwich Village and, along with Pollock and Baziotes was invited to exhibit at the Peggy Guggenheim "Art of This Century" gallery in New York City. In 1961 Motherwell began making limited edition prints of his work. He was the only one of the original abstract expressionists to enthusiastically embrace printmaking. Motherwell worked with numerous print workshops in the United States and Europe. These collaborations between the Motherwell and the printmakers were a source of great satisfaction to the artist. He synthesized his unique abstract style, and the materials and technical characteristics of printmaking to create over 200 editions over the next 30 years. Robert Motherwell died on July 16, 1991.

Motherwell, Robert "A la Pintura: Blue 5" Limited Edition Print Aquatint and Lift-Ground Etching 1972 |
| Hand Signed |
|
Edition # |
AP |
| Provenance & Extra Info |
Publisher: ULAE. Printer: Donn Steward. Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne #119. From Robert Motherwell’s unqualified masterpiece “A la Pintura”. The full sheet of the print entitled “Blue 5” signed by Motherwell in back ink (see photo). One of only eight extremely rare artists’ proofs signed in Motherwell’s hand “RM Trial 1972-1979” as referenced in the Sparks ULAE Catalogue Raisonne as MOTHERWELL # 24. It is unusual to find the individual color plates signed by Motherwell himself. In the final book edition of 40 copies only the colophon page is signed -- not the individual prints themselves. The “A la Pintura” project of 21 original intaglio prints was nearly four years in the making and was created to illuminate the text of a poem by Rafael Alberti. John McKendry, print curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art believes ”Motherwell has concentrated so much of his creativity into these pages that if all his paintings and other works were to be destroyed, if only this book were to survive, Motherwell would still be seen as a major artist of the twentieth century.” This print is the only print in the book whose format is a perfect square. It is Motherwell’s meditation on the color blue. It is also unusual because an entire page is devoted to only one verse of the poem. The text reads as follows: “Wings seize our brushes when we dip them in indigo.” Much has been written about these book pages and they have been widely reproduced but they must be seen “in person” to experience the full impact of their intense color and beauty. |

AP |
| Provenance & Extra Info |
Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne # 76. Publisher: Marlborough Graphics Inc., New York. Printed by Chris Prater, Kelpra Studio, London. Edition size 150. The Africa Suite was Motherwell’s earliest experiment in screenprinting. The ten prints in this suite were also his largest prints to this date. The original studies for “The Africa Suite” were a group of ten brush drawings employing Motherwell’s concept of automatism or free associative drawing. His next step was the more formal and intellectual process of adapting those drawings to the medium of the screenprint. AFRICA 8 is the most overtly sexual of these ten prints. It is also the most rhythmic and architectonic -- bringing to mind Motherwell’s early fascination with the work of Piet Mondrian. AFRICA 8 is in pristine condition which is rare since the screenprints are especially susceptible to scuffing and handling marks because of their large size. |

19/30 |
| Provenance & Extra Info |
Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne 231. Lift-ground etching and aquatint on J.B.Green paper. Printed by Catherine Mosley in the artist’s studio. Despite his ofttimes explosive use of color, Motherwell’s primary protagonists remained black and white throughout his career. In the vast majority of his prints, white does battle with black in a face-off of life against death, light against darkness. Nowhere is this more apparent than in “Dance II” Motherwell’s minimalist meditation on among other things Matisse’s classic painting “Dance”. Motherwell himself commented on this particular print calling it “full of ambiguities, mountains, massive blacks against pure white paper, rhythms of my arm-mind, immediacy yet not intimate.” This is the largest, simplest and most impressive print in the three print "Dance" series and illuminates Motherwell's mission in life to literally "strip art bare".

Motherwell, Robert "London Series I: Untitled (RED)" Limited Edition Print Screenprint on Double Elephant Paper 1971 |
| Hand Signed |
Lower right |
Edition # |
VI/XI |
| Provenance & Extra Info |
Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne # 90. Publisher: Marlborough Graphics Inc., New York. Printed by Chris Prater, Kelpra Studio, London. The London Series marked Motherwell’s largest print work to date. This series of prints is even slightly larger than the Africa Suite prints of 1970. The London Series I is a continued exploration by Motherwell of his rectangular “Open” theme but this time in a vertical format. White lines are etched and suspended from the top of the page on a field of pure solid color. Perhaps the most important thing to note about this particular print is that it is the first major “red” print of Motherwell’s oeuvre. It is also a very special historically significant presentation proof inscribed in pencil bottom left in Motherwell’s hand “To Arthur and Elaine Cohen”. The Cohens were personal friends of Motherwell. Arthur Cohen was the publisher of Meridian Books and Elaine Cohen was a pioneering modernist in the field of graphic design. In 1973 they founded the gallery and bookshop Ex Libris which specialized in the works of the European avant-garde. LONDON SERIES I: Untitled (Red) is in excellent condition which is rare because the Motherwell screenprints are often very susceptible to scuffing and handling marks because of their large size.

| Provenance & Extra Info |
Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne #526 An unsigned impression from the second commercial run of 1500. Publisher: Robert Motherwell. Printers: Bob Blanton (screenprinting) and Bruce Porter (lithography). Lithograph and screen print on Coventry paper. Original print designed to announce the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center in 1991. Only 25 impressions were actually signed and these were given as gifts to Lincoln Center patrons who donated over one million dollars to the program. The image itself is based on “M”, a collage from 1991. This is considered by many to be Motherwell’s last “great print” and was completed only a very short while before the artist’s death. In it he explores for the last time his signature image of the letter “M” which here symbolizes the artist himself as well as the master composer Mozart and explores Motherwell’s lifetime passion for music itself.

Signed in red pen |
Edition # |
Edition of 200, 50 signed |
| Provenance & Extra Info |
Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raissonne 243. Produced to benefit the Newport Opera Festival. This print celebrates Motherwell's love of the sea and of sailing. It features simple sleek abstract forms resembling sails and is an excellent example of Robert Motherwell's signature color Motherwell Blue (the same shade found on the Galois cigarette packs that so often found their way into his collage work). The deluxe edition consists of 200 unnumbered impressions of which approximately 50 were signed in red pen. This print is one of the 50 that is hand signed. It is conservation framed with plexi and museum quality 8 ply acid free mat board. The print is boldly hand signed “to Newport RM” in the bottom right hand corner in red ballpoint pen. It is very legible (see scan) but the red ink has slightly faded with time (as is usual in this edition). The image itself is fresh and bright. It is also signed in the plate in black in the upper right hand corner “RM July 1977” (see scan).
In the bottom left hard corner in very small black type is: “Robert Motherwell, America Cup II, 1977 collage and acrylic on canvasboard, private collection.” This print is an offset litho on Rives BFK paper of this original collage work. ( An unsigned edition of 750 posters on Dulcet paper was also produced, containing the text "Newport Opera 1979".).It is conservation framed with plexi and a nice 8 ply acid free mat board. The print is boldly hand signed “to Newport RM” in the bottom right hand corner in red ballpoint pen. It is also signed in the plate in black in the upper right hand corner “RM July 1977”. In the bottom left hard corner in very small black type is: “Robert Motherwell, America Cup II, 1977 collage and acrylic on canvasboard, private collection.

| Provenance & Extra Info |
Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne # 68. Publisher: The Academic and Professional Action Committee for a Responsible Congress, New York. The letter “P” has always held a special place of significance in the print work of Robert Motherwell. His very first prints at ULAE in 1962 were both variants on the letter “P” and were called “Poet I” and “Poet II”. Motherwell’s strong feelings for the printed word in general and poetry in specific are well documented. He felt the poet “painted” with words and the painter “rhymed’ with images. In 1970 Motherwell returned to the “P” motif but in an entirely different context. At this time the country was bogged down in Vietnam and Motherwell was asked to contribute an image to the anti-war movement. He chose to work within the system and pursue the cause of peace through political action. He donated a print to the lobbying efforts of the Academic and Professional Action Committee for a Responsible Congress to be sold as a fund raiser. The proceeds were distributed to candidates in the 1970 elections committed to ending the war. To many people today the image he contributed appears to be little more than a simple brushstroke but it is much more –- it is a profound anti-war statement with a simplicity that only Robert Motherwell could accomplish. Here the rounded portion of the “P” has been totally blown away and the letter has “fallen”. Motherwell spent over a day trying to decide where to place the image on the sheet and finally decided to place it at the very top of the paper –- to stress the ethereal nature of peace in 1970 and the ethereal wounded nature of peace even in our own time.

Edition # |
10/10 AP |
| Provenance & Extra Info |
Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne #300. Rare and unusual "oversized" 23 1/2 x 18 in. impression – far less than 10 prints are known to exist in this format which were all reserved for and preferred by the artist himself. The drawing inside the “open” window is two letters from the Phoenician alphabet. Motherwell was particularly fond of this Phoenician imagery because he felt it consisted of certain universal gestural “signs” that were common to all cultures. He especially liked the reed like quality of the agitated line which he felt animated the color field of this print. The large Motherwell painting “Phoenician Red Studio” incorporates one of the same Phoenician letters except that here in this print there are two letters that are reversed emphasizing the nature of the printing process itself.

Exhibited as part of the "Robert Motherwell/Beacon" Print Retrospective at LoRiver Gallery in Beacon, NY from October 23-December 6, 2004. This is Robert Motherwell's first print collaboration with master printer Irv Hollander at the Hollander Workshop, New York City. In this print Motherwell's primary protagonists black and white do battle in a face off of life against death, light against darkness. The imagery is directly related to the "Beside the Sea" paintings Motherwell was doing at the time. A fine example of Motherwell's early print work. This print exists in two editions: a limited edition signed & numbered by the artist and a facsimile poster edition. This is from the the original limited edition. These are highly collectible prints from the List Art program. The program commissioned artists to design & execute original work to promote cultural events in the US.

Motherwell, Robert "Untitled (Blue Open)" Limited Edition Print Lithograph 1968 |
| Hand Signed |
|
Edition # |
AP |
| Provenance & Extra Info |
This print represents Motherwell's first use of the "Open" motif. In this print Motherwell employs a nearly flat blue color ground. The expressiveness of the print comes from how the paper takes the ink as well as the conte crayon-like jagged line effect of the U shaped black lines. Motherwell would later contend that these lines were every bit as "gestural" as his "Beside the Sea" prints and paintings. It is an Artist Proof, printed with margins, measuring 15"x11" ; it is signed in pencil on the lower right RM with the date '68. On the lower left it is designated an Artist Proof in pencil, in Motherwell's hand, in French "Epreuve d'Artiste." Publisher was Editions Georges Fall (Paris) and it is printed on Rives BFK paper. The print is floated in the frame, and the paper has a beautiful deckled edge. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne #58. The piece is handsomely framed in a very heavy duty, contemporary solid maple wood frame with a gessoed matt black finish, recessed and floated. |

Regarded by many as Robert Motherwell’s finest “Open” print. It was selected by Motherwell himself for the back cover of the Belknap 1984 catalogue raisonne (see photo). Exhibition History: MOTHERWELL SELECTED PRINTS, Long Fine Art, New York City. Oct-Nov. 2003. Also MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne # 181. Publisher: Robert Motherwell. Printer: Catherine Mosley. In this print Motherwell achieves his most expressive use of the “open” motif. Not only does it use a beautiful Motherwell blue & beige combination but also his richest and most velvety black. The subject and predominate color in the print is this black which reflects Motherwell’s recent preoccupation with his own death. In 1974 Motherwell had undergone risky heart surgery and in 1975 he felt he had experienced a “creative rebirth”. Also it should be noted here that it is rare to find this print in such exceptionally good condition. |
