Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raissonne 243. Produced to benefit the Newport Opera Festival. This print celebrates Motherwell's love of the sea and of sailing. It features simple sleek abstract forms resembling sails and is an excellent example of Robert Motherwell's signature color Motherwell Blue (the same shade found on the Galois cigarette packs that so often found their way into his collage work). The deluxe edition consists of 200 unnumbered impressions of which approximately 50 were signed in red pen. This print is one of the 50 that is hand signed. It is conservation framed with plexi and museum quality 8 ply acid free mat board. The print is boldly hand signed “to Newport RM” in the bottom right hand corner in red ballpoint pen. It is very legible (see scan) but the red ink has slightly faded with time (as is usual in this edition). The image itself is fresh and bright. It is also signed in the plate in black in the upper right hand corner “RM July 1977” (see scan).
In the bottom left hard corner in very small black type is: “Robert Motherwell, America Cup II, 1977 collage and acrylic on canvasboard, private collection.” This print is an offset litho on Rives BFK paper of this original collage work. ( An unsigned edition of 750 posters on Dulcet paper was also produced, containing the text "Newport Opera 1979".).It is conservation framed with plexi and a nice 8 ply acid free mat board.
