Provenance & Extra Info
Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne #526 An unsigned impression from the second commercial run of 1500. Publisher: Robert Motherwell. Printers: Bob Blanton (screenprinting) and Bruce Porter (lithography). Lithograph and screen print on Coventry paper. Original print designed to announce the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center in 1991. Only 25 impressions were actually signed and these were given as gifts to Lincoln Center patrons who donated over one million dollars to the program. The image itself is based on “M”, a collage from 1991. This is considered by many to be Motherwell’s last “great print” and was completed only a very short while before the artist’s death. In it he explores for the last time his signature image of the letter “M” which here symbolizes the artist himself as well as the master composer Mozart and explores Motherwell’s lifetime passion for music itself.
