Provenance & Extra Info
Regarded by many as Robert Motherwell’s finest “Open” print. It was selected by Motherwell himself for the back cover of the Belknap 1984 catalogue raisonne (see photo). Exhibition History: MOTHERWELL SELECTED PRINTS, Long Fine Art, New York City. Oct-Nov. 2003. Also MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne # 181. Publisher: Robert Motherwell. Printer: Catherine Mosley. In this print Motherwell achieves his most expressive use of the “open” motif. Not only does it use a beautiful Motherwell blue & beige combination but also his richest and most velvety black. The subject and predominate color in the print is this black which reflects Motherwell’s recent preoccupation with his own death. In 1974 Motherwell had undergone risky heart surgery and in 1975 he felt he had experienced a “creative rebirth”. Also it should be noted here that it is rare to find this print in such exceptionally good condition.
