Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne # 76. Publisher: Marlborough Graphics Inc., New York. Printed by Chris Prater, Kelpra Studio, London. Edition size 150. The Africa Suite was Motherwell’s earliest experiment in screenprinting. The ten prints in this suite were also his largest prints to this date. The original studies for “The Africa Suite” were a group of ten brush drawings employing Motherwell’s concept of automatism or free associative drawing. His next step was the more formal and intellectual process of adapting those drawings to the medium of the screenprint. AFRICA 8 is the most overtly sexual of these ten prints. It is also the most rhythmic and architectonic -- bringing to mind Motherwell’s early fascination with the work of Piet Mondrian. AFRICA 8 is in pristine condition which is rare since the screenprints are especially susceptible to scuffing and handling marks because of their large size.
