Artist Description: "There is a place on the northwestern shore of Hawaii, the Big Island, where great ocean swells generated in storms thousands of miles to the north roll in unannounced with thundering force. During these times, inhabitants of the ancient villages lit fires high in the hills to guide the ali'i (Hawaiian aristocracy) through the treacherous surf, when they arrived from the distant islands of Maui, Oahu, Molokai and Kauai."
