CLAUDE LACOUDRE BIOGRAPHY

He was born in 1935 in Paris France and grew up in Brittany. He attended Ecole des Beax-Arts and his career ran from the late 1950's to the early 1970's. He served two years in the French navy where he got out of doing any real work by painting for the officer's mess. He preferred to paint in acrylics rather than oils, and would layer gesso on the canvas in the shape of his image before starting to paint. He also used pencil, pen & ink, and even coffee stains as media. His landscapes, especially seascapes of Brittany were in great demand, but he preferred doing nudes and portraits that revealed the monster in the subject. He had numerous gallery showings in New York, Paris, and Europe. One of his most significant series of paintings was The Drinkers, in which he painted imaginary portraits of various men who drank. He traveled extensively between New York, Paris, and Europe and the Middle East through the 1960's, running with the jet-set. In the early 1970's he was found in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. He ultimately returned to France and began a brief modeling and acting career, appearing in the film Lancelot du Lac by Robert Bresson. He died in 1988 in France.
