Published by Ettenger NY, 1991. “The Triple Self Portrait” was created by Neizvestny to further antagonize Khrushchev after Khrushchev attended a Neizvestny show in Mother Russia. Nose to nose in a political argument. Khrushchev stated. “ I don’t know if you are a devil or an angel. But we will find out!” As a national war hero Neizvestny could not be shot for treason for speaking his mind in public to the russian “A” list as well as the general public regarding freedom from oppression and tyranacal rulers. And freedom for all people from all walks of life. The left side of the painting is Ernst devilish side. The right side is ernst angel side. The center shows Ernst with a little ray of light coming down from heaven to indicate he was protected by a higher power. Naturally Ernst sent Khrushchev the first copy.

The Centaur is Neizvestny's trademark representation of himself, and his discontent with the Soviet Union. This piece was made at the beginning of the fall of the USSR. Purchased from the MAGNA Gallery in San Francisco in 1989. The certificate of authenticity was lost in transit, and Mr. Neizvestny's studio will not issue a duplicate certificate under ANY circumstances.
