GREGORY COATES BIOGRAPHY

Art Brokerage: Gregory Coates was born in 1961 in Washington, D.C. and continues to explore various materials like feathers, the bicycle inner tubes may well be his signature work. Noted critic Karen Wilkin has said that Coates works are intensely urban, gritty but refined abstractions that exploit dissonance the way jazz exploits dissonance ??" to create excitement and tension and then resolve themselves in the nick of times into harmony. Coates has been the recipient of Joan Mitchell, Pollock Krasner, Adolph and Esther Gottlieb, and New York State Foundation Grants.
