LUCIUS O'BRIEN BIOGRAPHY
 
1832-1899- Lucius Richard O'Brien, born at Shanty Bay, Ontario, the son of a lieutenant-colonel. Attended Upper Canada College, Toronto. Entered an architect's office in 1847 and later studied and practised as a civil engineer. Turned to painting about 1872. He was one of the first to paint in western Canada and the Rocky Mountains, in the early days of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Art Editor of Picturesque Canada, edited by G.M. Grant (1882). Charter member of the R.C.A., 1880, and first P.R.C.A. (1880-1890). Landscape painter.
