NOT VITAL BIOGRAPHY
 
The artist Not Vital was born inSwitzerland in 1948. Not Vital--whose name might sound like a 1970s rock band to some Anglophone ears but, correctly pronounced (Not Vi-tal'), is quite commonplace as Romansch names go--is difficult to categorize as an artist as he works across the artistic spectrum. Largely self-taught, he studied art in Paris and Rome. "I don't know if you can study art," he muses. "You can learn technique, perhaps ... but art?" While his work is conceptual, the results--mostly sculptural these days--are aesthetically compelling as well.
