ROBERT MOTHERWELL BIOGRAPHY

Art Brokerage specializses in the lithographs of artist Robert Motherwell. 37 listings 1915-1991 - Artist Robert Motherwell is one of the most recognized of the American Abstract Expressionist painters. He moved to Greenwich Village in 1941, abandoning his academic studies to paint full time. Motherwell created his first collages at Jackson Pollock's Studio in Greenwich Village and, along with Pollock and Baziotes was invited to exhibit at the Peggy Guggenheim "Art of This Century" gallery in New York City. In 1961 Robert Motherwell began making limited edition prints of his work. He was the only one of the original abstract expressionists to enthusiastically embrace printmaking. Motherwell worked with numerous print workshops in the United States and Europe. These collaborations between the Motherwell and the printmakers were a source of great satisfaction to the artist. Robert Motherwell synthesized his unique abstract style, and the materials and technical characteristics of printmaking to create over 200 editions over the next 30 years. Robert Motherwell died on July 16, 1991.

Provenance: Publisher: ULAE. Printer: Donn Steward. Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne #119. From Robert Motherwell's unqualified masterpiece "A la Pintura". The full sheet of the print entitled "Blue" signed by Motherwell in back ink (see photo). One of only eight extremely rare artists' proofs signed in Motherwell's hand "RM Trial 1972-1979" as referenced in the Sparks ULAE Catalogue Raisonne as MOTHERWELL # 24. It is unusual to find the individual color plates signed by Motherwell himself. In the final book edition of 40 copies only the colophon page is signed -- not the individual prints themselves. The "A la Pintura" project of 21 original intaglio prints was nearly four years in the making and was created to illuminate the text of a poem by Rafael Alberti. John McKendry, print curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art believes "Motherwell has concentrated so much of his creativity into these pages that if all his paintings and other works were to be destroyed, if only this book were to survive, Motherwell would still be seen as a major artist of the twentieth century." This print is the only print in the book whose format is a perfect square. It is Motherwell's meditation on the color blue. It is also unusual because an entire page is devoted to only one verse of the poem. The text reads as follows: "Wings seize our brushes when we dip them in indigo."

Provenance: Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne 231. Lift-ground etching and aquatint on J.B.Green paper. Printed by Catherine Mosley in the artist's studio. Despite his ofttimes explosive use of color, Motherwell's primary protagonists remained black and white throughout his career. In the vast majority of his prints, white does battle with black in a face-off of life against death, light against darkness. Nowhere is this more apparent than in "Dance II" Motherwell's minimalist meditation on among other things Matisse's classic painting "Dance". Motherwell himself commented on this particular print calling it "full of ambiguities, mountains, massive blacks against pure white paper, rhythms of my arm-mind, immediacy yet not intimate." This is the largest, simplest and most impressive print in the three print

The London Series marked Motherwell's largest print work to date. This series of prints is even slightly larger than the Africa Suite prints of 1970. The London Series I is a continued exploration by Motherwell of his rectangular "Open" theme but this time in a vertical format. White lines are etched and suspended from the top of the page on a field of pure solid color. Perhaps the most important thing to note about this particular print is that it is the first major "RED" print of Motherwell's oeuvre. It is a "true" artist's proof as it is inscribed in Motherwell's hand "Robert Motherwell for RM". LONDON SERIES I: Untitled (Red) is in very good condition with very minor scuffing.

Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne #526 An unsigned impression from the second commercial run of 1500. Publisher: Robert Motherwell. Printers: Bob Blanton (screenprinting) and Bruce Porter (lithography). Lithograph and screen print on Coventry paper. Original print designed to announce the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center in 1991. Only 25 impressions were actually signed and these were given as gifts to Lincoln Center patrons who donated over one million dollars to the program. The image itself is based on "M", a collage from 1991. This is considered by many to be Motherwell's last "great print" and was completed only a very short while before the artist's death. In it he explores for the last time his signature image of the letter "M" which here symbolizes the artist himself as well as the master composer Mozart and explores Motherwell's lifetime passion for music itself.

Provenance: Exhibited in the MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne # 68. Publisher: The Academic and Professional Action Committee for a Responsible Congress, New York. The letter "P" has always held a special place of significance in the print work of Robert Motherwell. His very first prints at ULAE in 1962 were both variants on the letter "P" and were called "Poet I" and "Poet II". Motherwell's strong feelings for the printed word in general and poetry in specific are well documented. He felt the poet "painted" with words and the painter "rhymed" with images. In 1970 Motherwell returned to the "P" motif but in an entirely different context. At this time the country was bogged down in Vietnam and Motherwell was asked to contribute an image to the anti-war movement. He chose to work within the system and pursue the cause of peace through political action. He donated a print to the lobbying efforts of the Academic and Professional Action Committee for a Responsible Congress to be sold as a fund raiser. The proceeds were distributed to candidates in the 1970 elections committed to ending the war. To many people today the image he contributed appears to be little more than a simple brushstroke but it is much more. it is a profound anti-war statement with a simplicity that only Robert Motherwell could accomplish. Here the rounded portion of the "P" has been totally blown away and the letter has "fallen". Motherwell spent over a day trying to decide where to place the image on the sheet and finally decided to place it at the very top of the paper - to stress the ethereal nature of peace in 1970 and the ethereal wounded nature of peace even in our own time.

Provenance: Regarded by many as Robert Motherwell's finest "Open" print. It was selected by Motherwell himself for the back cover of the Belknap 1984 catalogue raisonne (see photo). Exhibition History: MOTHERWELL SELECTED PRINTS, Long Fine Art, New York City. Oct-Nov. 2003. Also MOTHERWELL/BEACON Print Retrospective, Beacon, New York. October 23-December 6, 2004. Literature: Engberg/Banach Catalogue Raisonne # 181. Publisher: Robert Motherwell. Printer: Catherine Mosley. In this print Motherwell achieves his most expressive use of the "open" motif. Not only does it use a beautiful Motherwell blue & beige combination but also his richest and most velvety black. The subject and predominate color in the print is this black which reflects Motherwell's recent preoccupation with his own death. In 1974 Motherwell had undergone risky heart surgery and in 1975 he felt he had experienced a "creative rebirth". Also it should be noted here that it is rare to find this print in such exceptionally good condition.
