Born in 1898- Died 1976 - Artist Alexander Calder is best known for his creative abstract mobile constructions, although Alexander Calder was originally trained as a mechanical engineer. His artistic influences ranged from Mondrian to Arp to Miro, and it was Marcel Duchamp who first gave the name "mobile" to Calder's signature work. A mobile is a suspended or anchored moving sculpture. Calder was prolific and worked throughout his career in many art forms. Calder also produced drawings, oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, gouache and serigraphy. Alexander Calder also designed jewelry, tapestry, theatre settings and architectural interiors. Alexander Calder is the inventor of the stabile kinetic sculpture.
