JAMES CASTLE BIOGRAPHY

B. 1900-1977 - Born in Garden Valley, Idaho, James Castle was a self-taught artist who created drawings, assemblage and books throughout his lifetime. James Castle was profoundly deaf and is believed to have never learned to read and write. Castle's artworks are generally small in scale considering he worked exclusively with found materials such as papers salvaged from common packaging and mail, in addition to food containers of all types. James Castle's work is now included in major museum collections throughout the U.S. including the American Folk Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the High Museum in Atlanta, Georgia and the Art Institute of Chicago. In March 2005 the Boise Art Museum will present an exhibition featuring their extensive collection of Castle's work.
