Story / Additional Info : This signed screenprint edition of 150 by Banksy was released as part of his first major American exhibition Barely Legal. Grannies features two old women in front of a blocked pink background. They sit their well-worn armchairs indulging in the types of things grannies tend to enjoy, they are knitting together, and drinking tea. But, taking a closer look, it is clear that the grannies are not all they seem. They are knitting jumpers with slogans that read , ‘Punk\'s Not Dead’, (another reference to punk from Banksy, as we saw in the London Turf Wars exhibition of 2004) and ‘Thug For Life’. It is generally considered one of the more amusing images to come out of the 2006 exhibition for which Modern Multiples produced the prints. Both grannies seem quite pleased with themselves, as though they are enjoying the thrill of defying cultural stereotypes. It has been suggested however, that Grannies by Banksy actually speaks to the gentrification and appropriation of black culture, taming and co-opting it into mainstream culture that is suitable even for the old white English ladies.\

Art Brokerage: Banksy aka Robin Banks British Graffiti Artist: B. 1974. Grafitti artist Banksy is a graffiti artist from Bristol, UK, whose artwork has appeared throughout London and other locations around the world. Despite this he carefully manages to keep his real name from the mainstream media. However, many newspapers assert that his real name is Robert or Robin Banks. Banksy, despite not calling himself an artist, has been considered by some as talented in that respect; he uses his original street art form, often in combination with a distinctive stenciling technique, to promote alternative aspects of politics from those promoted by the mainstream media. Recently Banksy played a prank in New York and set up a booth to sell his artwork. Art Brokerage has buyers for his original paintings and prints. Listings Wanted.
