Art Brokerage: Derrick Crossland American Artist: b. 1960. Derrick attended the University of Colorado majoring in biology with under study of art and art history. After college he enjoyed a successful career as a master wood worker in cabinetry and kitchen remodeling. During this time Derrick was always creating and refining his sculpting techniques. Years of working with a wide variety of wood species using all types of joinery helped him develop techniques he has pioneered to create his current sculptures. Completely self taught and seeing things from a unique prospective, his work reflects his strong individualism. Derrick was influenced at an early age by the underwater adventures of Jacques Cousteau. A deep love of the ocean and all its creatures took a deep and unwavering hold on him. Derrick carved his first shark, out of a bar of soap, at the early age of twelve and his love for the craft of sculpting began. Being a scuba diver and living in the Florida Keys gives Derrick the perfect opportunity to observe the wildlife that inspires his sculptures.
