Art Brokerage: Frederick Hammersley American Artist: b. 1919-2009. Frederick Hammersley (January 5, 1919 – May 31, 2009) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hammersley first gained critical recognition in 1959 as one of the "Four Abstract Classicists" along with Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, and John McLaughlin, whose work was featured in an exhibition of the same name, organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and traveling to the San Franciso Museum of Modern Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, and Queen's University in Belfast, Ireland. The critic Jules Langsner, writing for the catalogue, is credited with coining the term "hard-edge" painting as a description of the artists' use of flat, colored shapes applied to the canvas with sharply delineated edges. Hammersley wrote in an exhibition catalog, "hard-edge is often very hard to take, coming to it cold—or, even to the practiced eye". He expanded his repertoire beyond hard-edge, dividing his art into three categories: "hunches", "geometrics", and "organics". In addition to paintings, Hammersley also produced photographs, computer-generated art, prints and drawings. He died on May 31, 2009 at his home in Albuquerque. Listings wanted.
