Story / Additional InfoCross of the Millennium - 1/3 Life Size Sculpture. “The Cross of the Millennium” was a thoughtful and dynamic work that Frederick Hart developed over several years to celebrate the 2000th birthday of Jesus Christ. The piece embraces the use of light the same way the medieval artists employed stained glass to create a powerful spiritual presence within a space. Hart intricately designed the piece to represent Christ’s life with the Star of Bethlehem representing the birth and the crucifixion viewed from the front, and the capturing of the mysterious resurrection seen from the back. In doing so Hart is able to convey the idea of transcendence both physically and spiritually. Hart went on to present the life-size sculpture to Pope John Paul II who declared the piece “a profound theological statement for our day.”

Frederick Hart - United States

Art Brokerage: Frederick Hart American Sculptor: b. 1943-1999. Artist and sculptor and stone cutter in the classical style, Frederick Hart was an apprentice at the National Cathedral in Washington DC and learned there about sculpting and stone cutting. Hart's big break came when he won a competition to design the facade of the National Cathedral, which incorporated his thirteen year masterpiece of the Creation, a 21 X 15 foot bas relief sculpture. His work was influenced by the teachings of Teilhard de Chardin and his book Divine Milieu. Hart created the figures in Ex Nihilo in a constant state of awakening and becoming. Hart also created "Three Soldiers" Vietnam Memorial, a figurative bronze to contrast with the abstraction of Maya Lin's work. The memorial is the most visited monument in Washington DC. Born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in South Carolina. As a proponent of realism, he was made an honorary member of The American Society of Classical Realism Guild of Artists. Sculpting with light Hart went on to create a collection of works in cast acrylic which absorbed and soften light. These works often had ethereal inner figures and a prismatic shape to illuminate the subject.
