Art Brokerage: Ilya Bolotowski Russian Artist: b. 1907-1981. Abstract artist, Ilya Bolotowsky was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and raised in Baku on the Caspian Sea. He departed from his native country on the eve of the Russian Revolution, fleeing first with his family to the Republic of Georgia, and then to Constantinople. In 1923, he emigrated with his family to New York, where he received his first formal training at the National Academy of Design, from 1924 to 1930. He was a leading early 20th-century painter in abstract styles in New York City. His work, a search for philosophical order through visual expression, embraced cubism and geometric abstraction and was much influenced by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.
