Additional Info : Jean-Claude Gaugy, today known as the father of Linear Expressionism, has been evolving his signature medium of paintings carved into wood for almost 50 years. Arriving in the United States as a classically trained sculptor, he discovered Americans were unfamiliar with three dimensional sculpture, so he began carving bas-relief plaques into heavy slabs of wood that could hang on walls like paintings. He learned as he carved each work, and a new art medium developed. Over the years, the results have become lyrical expressions of indelibly carved lines coupled with many richly applied layers of paint. Doing no preliminary sketching before he carves, Gaugy then applies paint with his hands, preferring direct and intimate contact with his work. Deeply emotional, semi-abstract, yet anchored in tradition, Gaugy’s passionate and gestural works cannot be mistaken for those of any other artist.

Art Brokerage: Jean Claude Gaugy French Artist: b. 1944. Jean Claude Gaugy was born in 1944. At age 14 young Gaugy heard his own call of independence and left his mountain village for Paris. There he survived by doing sketches in cafes and soon was invited by the owner of a lavish dining club to paint portraits of customers. During the day Gaugy pursued classical art studies and the Ecole des Beaux Arts, focusing on his great love of sculpture. For his part, Gaugy continues a tradition of synthesis, fusing well-mastered skills of sculpture and painting in a signature style that has become known as Linear Expressionism. He carves rhythmic, flowing, yet decisive line into wood, and then complements that powerful sense of movement with the rich complexities of color. The results are internationally admired and collected works that speak to the wholeness of being human. Listings wanted.
