Jerry Byerly

Jerry Byerly is known for his inestimable contributions to the Texas art scene, but to think of him as nothing more than a promoter of Texas art does a disservice to his own talents. It is true, as a Texas Monthly art critic wrote, that Byerly labored for sixty years to promote Texas art, often at the expense of his own. An ardent regionalist and devoted Texan, he produced within a single decade an impressive and lasting body of work, a creative burst that ended with his 1943 appointment to head what was then the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. But what's also true and often forgotten is that Byerly was a prolific and versatile artist who made a number of contributions to the American Scene movement. Listings wanted.
