Art Brokerage: Kamal Givian - Iranian Artist living in the United States. b. 1960. Kamal Givian was born January 12, 1960 in the small town of Zanzan, Iran. His fascination and love of art began when he was a young child. He first attended art school at the age of thirteen and continued until he graduated with honors from the University of Fine Arts in Tehran. After graduation from college, he began his career, acquiring many different skills, using variety of mediums.Kamal perfected his drawing, painting and sculpting skills by spending several years studying the moods and mannerisms of the patients at psychiatric hospitals. He acquired special permission to use them as models for his early renderings. At the time he rented a house in the country near a hospital so he could have the opportunity to be close to nature and have an unlimited supply of subjects to paint. Kamal paints landscapes, in particular, with form and style in the manner of a Japanese composition, moving in a horizontal progression vertically rising. Composition, made up of form and color, is the base and most important part of his paintings. Form is like his philosophy, it belongs to God and to man, difficult to see and analyze. Like a Cezanne, color is essential but he does not feel that his landscapes are a reflection of Cezanne's paintings. Influenced by the freedom of expression by Goya, Modigliani and Delacroix, he learned that form could be exaggerated for effect. Kamal's figurative paintings are unique to his own style yet show the interest he has in the study of the masters, the Egyptian period of three or four thousand years ago and the Chinese art and anatomy through the centuries. In 1989, Kamal had immigrated to Paris with the idea that Europe was the place where art had been influenced in the past centuries. After 45 days, he learned that the lack of language fluency, finances and interpersonal connections was too much for him to bare. Before he departed France, he met Pierre Saszar at a gallery. Mr. Saszar said he was opening a modern museum in China and requested that he work with him. In 1989, he returned to Iran to have an exhibition at the Aria Gallery and then an exhibition at the Zayhun Gallery. In 1990 he had an exhibition at the Babh Gallery in Tehran. In 1991 he returned to Paris where he exhibited his artwork. Since the latter part of 1999, Kamal's landscapes have been exhibited and acquired by collectors in New York, North Carolina, Colorado and California. In 2001 he was exhibited by H. Heather Edelman Gallery of NY. Listings wanted by Art Brokerage.
