The concert was organized to raise funds to combat the crack-cocaine epidemic in New York by famed concert promoter and producer Bill Graham. Graham revisited his old Bronx neighborhood in August 1986, and was appalled to see that the drug culture had effectively wiped out the local culture.
New York Street Artist Keith Haring designed the poster "CRACK DOWN!" for the fundraising concert at Madison Square Garden on Halloween 1986. The artist roster for the concert included Santana, Run DMC, The Allman Brothers Band, Mick Taylor (from the Rolling Stones), Felix Cavaliere, Ruben Blades, Paul Butterfield, Crosby, Stills and Nash, and Olatunji.
