Art Brokerage: Yan Zoritchak Czechoslovakian Glass Artist: Yan Zoritchak was born in Zdiar, Slovakia in 1944. He spent his childhood in this small mountain village, taking great inspiration from the enchanting landscapes and from the great open spaces. Here, he developed his passion for space, and when he later became acquainted the medium of glass; it immediately became the ideal means for him to express his love of light and for his depiction of the cosmos. Zoritchak learned to work with glass at the Prague School of Applied Arts, where he learned techniques for crystal production and decoration. Having acquired a certain artistic education, he decided in 1970 to move to Paris where glass-working was still considered a form of craft. In 1969, in his final examination for a degree, Zoritchak presented a crystal “egg” – that also revealed the fascination held by the artist for this material as well as his interest in using it for sculptures. The 1970s were marked by his way of working with glass: constructivist, minimalist and geometrical sculptures that, despite their apparent simplicity, reveal great complexity in their interaction of light, space and material. The artist’s leitmotif in this period was a representation of the cosmos. During the 1980s he continued to investigate the theme of the universe and its elements. Since the end of the 1980s, the artist’s works however have become more intimate and closer to a representation of an interior universe. He has exhibited his works in one-man and collective shows throughout Europe. Since 1976 Zoritchak has worked occasionally in the Val Saint Lambert workshops where he has pursued his innovative research on glass-working techniques. Listings wanted by Art Brokerage.
