Provenance / HistorySuperb color lithograph of David Hockney's artwork created to promote the New York Metropolitan Opera production of an Igor Stravinsky triple bill of The Rite of Spring, The Nightingale, and Oedipus Rex, which featured sets and costumes designed by Hockney. This poster is one of only a few hand-signed examples of this print. Printed in London at Petersburg Press 1981. ‘Off the Wall: Hockney Posters’, catalogue number 104.
Story / Additional InfoThis is one of the few Hockney posters designed entirely by Hockney himself and, as such, ranks as a Hockney poster in the truest sense of that expression. Hockney on his designs for the 1981 New York Metropolitan Opera's Stravinsky production: 'What I liked about the program of The Rite of Spring, The Nightingale, and Oedipus Rex at the Metropolitan Opera was how you went from Stravinsky's most kinetic to his most static work for the stage — seemingly from birth and awareness to self-knowledge and death. We conceived it as one total piece of theater.'
