Art Brokerage: Hernan Bas American Artist: b. 1978. Hernan Bas was born 1978 in Miami, Florida, United States. He graduated in 1996 from the New World School of the Arts in Miami. "His work indulges in the production of romantic, melancholic and old world imagery, and makes reference to Wilde, Huysmans and other writers of the Aesthetic and Decadent period in literature." Hernan Bas had his fifth solo exhibition at Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Miami in March 2011 and his first European retrospective at Kunstverein Hannover in Germany in 2012. In 2010 Bas exhibited at Victoria Miro Gallery and Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Paris. Hernan Bas: Works from the Rubell Family Collection debuted in Miami at The Rubell Family Collection in December 2007. In February 2009 the exhibition traveled to the Brooklyn Museum. Spanning a decade, this exhibition included examples from each of the artist’s series. In 2005, he presented Soap Operatic, a solo exhibition at The Moore Space, Miami. Other notable exhibitions include the 2004 Whitney Biennial, New York; Ideal Worlds: New Romanticism in Contemporary Art, Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt; Triumph of Painting: Part Three, Saatchi Gallery, London; Like Color in Pictures, Aspen Art Museum; and Humid, The Moore Space, Miami. His work is included in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern, NY; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Museum of Contemporary Art, LA; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami among others. Hernan Bas' tapestry intricately weaves his subject of desire into an object of luxurious decadence. Drawing reference from the narrative regalia of medieval wall hangings, his carpet transfers the expressionist elegance of his paintings to stylised stitch work. Woven in bright colours, Bas’ mythological scene presents both a contemporary and timeless apotheosis. The acid hues and pixellated texture replicate the virtuality of television or digital imaging, while his antique process echoes the intimacy of heartfelt endeavour. In creating a functional object rather than a painterly illusion, Bas incorporates a more complex dimension to his opulent fantasies. His tapestry facilitates lifestyle embellishment and role-play fetishism. Listings wanted.
