Art Brokerage: Zephyr American Artist: Dubbed "the elder-statesman of graffiti" by The New York Times in 1995, New York City artist Andrew Witten, professionally known as Zephyr or Zeph, began creating artwork in 1975 and first used his moniker "Zephyr" in 1977. He was part of the first wave of New York City graffiti artists to make the transition from creating urban art on subway cars and buildings to exhibiting in galleries. Zephyr's work was shown in New York City's East Village FUN Gallery, among his visionary urban peers including Kenny Scharf, Keith Haring, and Futura 2000. In 1983, he designed the title sequence for and was featured in the renowned hip-hop film Wild Style, and he was also among a group of graffiti legendries showcased in the movie Style Wars. A key founder of the Rolling Thunder Writers (RTW), his position in metropolitan graffiti crews took broad form; he was additionally a close friend of Dondi White, later authoring the key monograph on the artist entitled Style Master General, and his subway car work was photographed by Henry Chalfant.
