Art Brokerage: Mel Bochner American Conceptual Artist: b. 1940. Mel Bochner, was born 1940 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received his BFA degree at the Carnegie Institute of Technology 1962 (major in painting; minor in philosophy) and has taught aesthetics, art history and sculpture at the School of Visual Arts, New York, since 1965. Bochner became deeply involved in 'moving away from the tangible "Object of Art" into a more conceptual notion of art as a procedure'. He made number drawings and photograph pieces based on sets of simple rules involving permutation, reversal, rotation and progression. In 2004, Bochner’s work was exhibited in the Whitney Biennial and was part of OpenSystems: Rethinking Art c. 1970 at London’s Tate Modern in 2005. His pieces are held in several major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2011, a retrospective of his work was held at the National Gallery of Art.
