Art Brokerage: Kevin Redstar Native American Artist: b. 1943. Kevin Red Star was born and raised on the Crow reservation in Southwestern Montana where he was surrounded by creative people. His father was a musician and his mother was known for her expert fiber crafts. During his second year in high school in 1962 he was chosen to attend the new Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe where he studied until 1965. He was then awarded a scholarship to the San Francisco Art Institute. That same year Kevin Redstar won both First Prize and The Governor's Trophy Award at the Scottsdale National Indian Art Exhibition. He completed his formal education at Montana State University and Eastern Montana College. In 1975 he was invited back to the Institute of American Indian Art as an Artist-in-Residence. Redstar's career as a major American artist was launched. He has been actively painting for over three decades. Over the years Kevin has received major accolades and honors. Most recently, in 1995, he was selected as a Copenhaver Scholar-in-Residence at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. Later that year he participated in the cultural exchange with the Russian Academy of Art. In May, 1997 Kevin Redstar received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Rocky Mountain College, Billings, Montana. Kevin is passionate about authenticity in his portraits of Crow warriors and dancers. He meticulously researches the history and costumes of his Crow tribe. His paintings have been collected by the Smithsonian Institute, the Denver Museum of Fine Art, the Whitney Museum in Cody, Wyoming, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, The Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Eitlejorg Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana. He has been featured in special exhibitions around the world including shows in France, Belgium, Germany, China and Japan. Listings wanted by Art Brokerage.
