Art Brokerage: Sven Lukin Latvian American Artist: b. 1934-2022. Sven Lukin's artworks blend the frontality of painting with the volume typically associated with sculpture. In addition to more conventional geometric abstract paintings and prints, his oeuvre includes canvas-covered sculptural elements that bulge and curve out from gallery walls as well as wall-mounted constructions composed from multiple overlapping panels of different shapes and dimensions. Lukin rendered his hard-edged patterns in high-keyed Pop art colors on a diverse range of supports that included canvas, Styrofoam, and burlap-on-wood, initially working with shaped canvases, as in X-ing (1963), where flat, rectilinear matrices overlap. His interest in three-dimensionality may have stemmed from his architecture studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was inspired by the experimental modernist architect Louis Kahn. Lukin regularly exhibited in critically acclaimed shows in the 1960s, including a group show of five artists titled "The Shaped Canvas" (1964) at the Guggenheim. His works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. Listings wanted.
